Thursday, November 6, 2008 at 12:13AM '30 Days of Night' Sequel Sees the Light of Day
Back in June,
we theorized
about what a sequel to
30 Days of Night might resemble. The word was
going around, thanks to
Bloody Disgusting, that a direct-to-DVD sequel
was being quietly prepped for the
Josh Hartnett vampire movie.
This week, that website is
confirming
the news that a sequel is on the way from Mandate Pictures, although
in the latest report there's no news as to whether or not it will be a
theatrical release or a video-only production. My hunch is that their math
indicates a theatrical run would make them enough money to go that route.

The first film had about a 50/50 split between domestic and foreign markets, and it definitely made a little bit of money. I would imagine the sequel would cost less, because you won't have Josh Hartnett this time around and because after the brand is established in cases like this, you only try to sell that brand; you only need bigger budgets if you're re-upping with Johnny Depp and the first movie made $300 million. So financially, a sequel makes sense.
But 30 Days of Night is a pretty divisive movie. Not too many people are just fine with it; it's one of those love-it-or-hate-it propositions. How will the sequel keep the fans happy? They're bringing back the character of Stella Oleson, played by Melissa George in round one. She's out for revenge on the vampires in the second movie. I'm picturing a kind of bad-ass Sarah Connor from T2 all of a sudden... We don't know if George will be back or not, only that her character, like Celine Dion's heart, will go on. Personally, I'd rather see a prequel with The Stranger (Ben Foster), so we could focus on that freakbag a little bit and see what carnage he saw. Another time, perhaps.
