Thursday, November 6, 2008 at 5:50PM James Cameron's 'Avatar' To Be Released in IMAX
I suppose this isn't a tremendous surprise, though it
does offer more proof to the viability of IMAX as a distribution point for major
studio films.
The company and 20th Century Fox will release
Avatar, the heady and long-gestating new movie
from James
Cameron, on December 19, 2009, the same day it arrives is
conventional 3-D theaters.
Variety adds that the new arrangement will
still allow Avatar to be released theatrically in any available format.
"Our goal with Avatar is to revolutionize live-action 3-D moviemaking, and I have no doubt that it will look and sound incredible in Imax 3-D," said Cameron, who, it should be noted, has very little doubt about anything he does.
The move underscores the impact the emerging 3-D technologies have had on studios. Whether or not it has that effect on audiences has yet to be determined. But you would have to imagine that if you're serious about Avatar, if you're serious about the things that Cameron is serious about with this film, that IMAX makes absolutely perfect sense.
