Thursday, November 6, 2008 at 9:12PM The Big Picture Interview with Seann William Scott
We know him best as Stifler, the sex-obsessed party boy
from the American Pie films, and this weekend,
Seann William
Scott returns to that familiar territory in
Role Models, co-starring
with Paul Rudd.
You spend a lot of screen time with
Bobb'e J.
Thompson in Role Models, and he swears more than any other character in the
movie. Did you help him with that at all?
Does
Elizabeth Banks smell as good as I think she
does?
Scott has had an up-and-down career in the last decade, with the highs of American Pie and its sequels, plus the underrated Rundown, and the lows of Mr. Woodcock and Southland Tales. He's pretty candid about his box office failures, as we found out, as well as his own place in the food chain.

That's probably the one trick I have in my trick bag - to swear (laughs). He's really funny, he actually reminded me of Eddie Murphy in Delirious, that stand-up routine that he did, but like the 11-year-old version of him. He didn't need any help swearing.
But he's really talented, really great. I was so humbling to work with him because I'd go home everyday and be like, "Awesome, the 11-year-old is more talented than I am!" But I spent more time with him than anyone else, and after a couple of days, he let his guard down and he's a typical sweet kid. So I kind of ended up becoming a role model for him, but not a very good one. My heart was in the right place.
Was there a conscious decision to come back and do a broad comedy after kind of going away from those for a while, or was this just a project you felt you had to do?
You know, I tried some smaller films and then the last two studio comedies were Dukes of Hazard and Mr. Woodcock. I mean, it seemed like a good idea, and I'm glad I did it because I developed really great friends, but it's just like any other business - you have to have success. Even though Dukes made a lot of money, it was probably the worst-reviewed film I've ever done. I actually got more pleasure out of reading the bad reviews than watching the movie (laughs). I read the bad reviews and I was laughing so hard...it was awesome.
But I remember seeing Vince Vaughn in Wedding Crashers and thinking that it was so rewarding to see him go back to that Swingers character, and I just kept thinking, "I want to cater to the audience that gave me a career."

I don't know, I didn't get close enough. I'd like to think so.
I just kind of imagine when she walks in a room it smells like lilacs and sugar cookies.
(Laughs) It is lilacs and sugar cookies, actually. Did you get to keep that minotaur costume?
Oh, I fucking burned it. Every time they said I had to do something in the minotaur costume, smoke started coming out of my ears. It was so hot in there, and I looked like such a jackass, I'm like, "This better be funny, because I'm a clown right now."
They actually wanted to shoot the poster with me in that, and I'm like, "No way. I'm not going to be in billboards in New York and L.A. and all over the country dressed like a damn man-bull!"
Even though you want to kind of re-establish yourself with comedy, can I go ahead and start the rumor that you're interested in playing Captain America?
Captain America? I heard Matthew McConaughey was going to do that. Did you read that?
Yeah, but there's nothing to it.
Oh, they would never hire me for that. Can you imagine? Literally, I think the studio would get bombed. I think all those comic book guys would be like, "Are you kidding me? Fucking Stifler? I'm never going to see that fuckin' movie."
