Our First Look at Seven of 'Nine'

I've got a very good feeling about Nine, the new adaptation of the stage musical that itself was an adaptation of Fellini's 8 1/2. Some people automatically dismiss musicals as being silly or even worse, but there are tons of great musicals, modern and classic, and this has more than enough ingredients to make it work.

For starters, it's directed by Rob Marshall, who also made Chicago. The thing about Chicago that I like the most, particularly among recent musicals, is that it felt like a movie and not just a filmed version of the stageplay, which hindered Rent, Phantom of the Opera, and The Producers. He's also cast the film well, with Daniel Day-Lewis the only principal cast member not seen here:

So here we go, from left to right: Judi Dench, Penelope Cruz (sitting), Marion Cotillard, Sophia Loren, Fergie (sitting), Nicole Kidman, and Kate Hudson. I presume the two women in the shadows on the far left and far right of the photo are dancers. But, honestly, how about that cast? The only one not nominated for an Oscar is Fergie, obviously, although she might be by the time the movie is released if her crapmazing Sex and the City theme gets enough juice in awards season. And of the remaining six women, only Cruz and Hudson haven't won an Oscar. So that's a pretty good cast.

Nine is the story of a film director (Day-Lewis) struggling to make his next movie while juggling the demands of all the women in his life. Can Daniel Plainview sing? I guess we'll find out on September 9, 2009.

Really looking forward to this, what a great cast, wood inducing even. I only hope Kate Hudson got her vocal chops from her dad and NOT her mom. As for Daniel, I like Javier but I'm so glad he dropped out, Day Lewis has yet to be anything but riveting on film.
