Saturday, November 8, 2008 at 4:00AM Sarah Jessica Parker Dismisses Catrall's 'Sex' Sequel Talk
Sex and the City had a pretty good run this
summer. Its opening day was pretty amazing (something like $27 million), and
when they stopped counting ticket sales around the world, it had made $413
million. Not bad for a little $65 million flick coming out when Iron Man
and Indiana Jones were throwing huge numbers on the board, especially
when said movie really didn't add anything to the conclusion of the TV series.
We knew nothing new about those characters after the movie than we did at the
end of the show. If anything, it was a bit of a across-the-board cop-out.

Obviously, though, because it was a hit, the talk then turned to a sequel.
We reported a
while back that the show's creator,
Michael Patrick King, was writing a sequel and that author
Candace Bushnell was eager to get started on a series of prequels dealing with Carrie Bradshaw's college years.
For some of us, that's physically draining news, and for others, the most
exciting thing you've read since the latest installment of "What's Sexy Now!" in
InStyle.

This week, it's Kim Cattrall giddily confirming the sequel on Britain's Paul O'Grady Show. The odd thing is, almost everyone believes the delay in making the first movie was Cattrall's quibbling over money and screen time. Now, she's jumping into the sequel head first.
But while Cattrall says Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and the other one will reconvene next summer, SJP (that's gossip lingo for Sarah Jessica Parker) says Cattrall is getting ahead of herself.
"I'm thrilled to know Kim is excited but all the deals are not yet done," Parker tells Access Hollywood. "We wanted to (do it) the first time, and now we're hopefully doing it again for the second time."
Remedial math instructions notwithstanding, there can only be one thing holding this up: Green. Scratch. Benjamins. As in, who gets how many? The girls definitely have a bargaining chip; you can only imagine how much money New Line/Time Warner made not just off the theatrical release but sales of the DVD and sales of the TV box sets in the past five to six months. I would suspect that Parker will get a huge payday (maybe $20 million or better) plus a percentage, followed by Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis in that order.
If they want to make it, the studio will have to fork over the dough, because it's probably the easiest money it will make all year. Cattrall said they'll film next summer, and that sounds about right. Let's see how long it takes this deal to be officially announced.
