'Twilight' Cast Steps Into the Sunlight
Friday, November 7, 2008 at 6:26PM
I still wonder if all of this attention would be focused
on
Twilight if Harry Potter hadn't split
from its original November 21, 2008 release date for the possibility of more
cash next July. Certainly, the adaptation of
Stephenie
Meyer's young adult vampire series would have maintained its core
audience, but in the shadow of Potter and in direct competition at that time
with The Day the Earth Stood Still, becoming more mainstream would have been
difficult.
But you have to
give a lot of credit to Summit Entertainment for recognizing the possibilities when
it moved into Harry Potter's old neighborhood. The film was already done, for
all practical purposes, so the only thing that needed to be changed or even
could be changed was the marketing: How aggressive would the studio go now that
it essentially created a headline for itself?

And Vanity
Fair has a new spread in its new issue, featuring a lovelier-than-ever Kate
Winslet on the cover. VF interviews all the vampires (really?) and takes
advantage of an attractive cast by ditching the doom and gloom and photographing
what appears to be a new catalog for Abercrombie & Fitch.

The answer so far is that others are marketing the film for Summit, with an appearance on the Scream Awards, we learned today that a brand new clip from the film will debut as part of Monday's Heroes broadcast on NBC, and the promotion machine is stepping up its efforts, with the cast popping up in national publications like Entertainment Weekly and Vanity Fair. EW is featuring three rotating covers this week featuring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart; the magazine says they're "Collector's Covers," but really, most periodicals are lucky if readers bother to buy them anymore, much less keep them.

Twilight will be in theaters on November 21st, and the only question that remains now is how big will it be?
