Lasso of Truth: Beyoncé Wants to be Wonder Woman

I think Beyoncé Knowles has gone about her acting career the right way. When you think about it, she's been uber-famous for a while, and Goldmember was what, six years ago? Prior to that, she was in a pretty hip recreation of Carmen on MTV, but she had only really dabbled in acting until Dreamgirls. She was certainly fine in that, not great, but I don't think anyone came away from it thinking it was the worst thing they'd ever seen.

She has a new movie in theaters this December - Cadillac Records - and it's another musical. Looking to move beyond being a screen songbird, Beyoncé tells Geoff Boucher of the Los Angeles Times she'd love to play Wonder Woman. Interestingly enough, we were just talking about that the other day, after a website put up a phony poster of Megan Fox in the heroine's garb.

"After doing these roles that were so emotional I was thinking to myself, 'OK, I need to be a superhero,'" Knowles says. "Although, when you think about the psychology of the heroes in the films these days, they are still a lot of work, of course, and emotional. But there's also an action element that I would enjoy."

She adds, "I want to do a superhero movie and what would be better than Wonder Woman? It would be great. And it would be a very bold choice. A black Wonder Woman would be a powerful thing. It's time for that, right?"

Wonder Woman is certainly a movie DC Comics and Warner Bros. has to make, in my opinion, but is Beyoncé the right candidate?

I believe it's dismissive to say she can't do it because she's black. You could argue that a Greek Amazon - which is the heritage of the character - would be a little more exotic. My own preference for the role has always been Rosario Dawson, because she's tall, athletic, has sex appeal, and I'm confident she could pull it off. Ironically enough, she voices the character of Artemis in the Wonder Woman animated DVD, which will be released next year.

My big concern with Beyoncé is that she won't be believable doing the action scenes. That, more than the color of her skin, is a factor in my mind. Plus, you could technically make Wonder Woman any ethnicity you want, so long as everyone on her Amazon island looks roughly the same. A lot of people favor lilywhite actresses for the role, but that's a lot less consistent with the character than a woman of some color, frankly.

Beyoncé wouldn't be my choice, although she says she's already met with DC and Warner Bros. about the role. That doesn't mean anything other than she's expressed an interest and they've listened.  But the more women that are interested, the better. Maybe that'll help convince Warner Bros. to finally get this made.
