'Slumdog,' 'Milk' Lead Satellite Award Nominees
Sunday, November 30, 2008 at 11:25PM
The nominees have been announced for the 13th annual
Satellite
Awards, presented by the International Press Association. It works
very much the way the Golden Globes does (or is that do?), although there are awards in technical
categories as well. The awards will be handed out on Sunday, December 14th in
beautiful Century City, California.
The big news is probably that Meryl Streep has received
nominations both Best Actress categories, for Doubt and Mamma Mia!,
though I think most people would probably have assumed that much, given the weak
year of performances (no offense to Kat Dennings, but does she really deserve a
nomination for something based on Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist; does
the film deserve three?). Mark Ruffalo also got the double dip, which wasn't
expected, for The Brothers Bloom and What Doesn't Kill You.

Elsewhere, The Dark Knight got passed over for Best Picture, nabbing nominations for both Christopher Nolan and Heath Ledger. Slumdog Millionaire and Milk emerged as the most-nominated films of the year, with six each. Robert Downey Jr. received a supporting nomination for Tropic Thunder, which was good to see, while Benjamin Button and Elegy, both of which are based on previously published works, are nominated in the original screenplay category, and that is not good to see. If you're looking for a major snub, by the way, Benjamin Button was pretty much shut out.
