Gerard Butler About to Lose His Man Card
Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at 4:06AM
There's a memorable moment in the Oscar-winning
Moonstruck where Cher slaps Nicolas Cage right across the face and yells,
"Snap out of it!" Somebody needs to give
Gerard Butler
a little dose of that.
King Leonidas has made two kinds of movies since 300,
tough as nails stuff like
Rocknrolla and the soon-to-be-released
video game adaptation Game or incredibly femme-baiting flicks like
P.S. I Love You and the upcoming romcom
The Ugly
Truth. I'm not saying there's not room on the ol' filmography for
a romantic comedy, but there sure isn't room for another one right now.

And yet, Butler will perform the ultimate romcom trick, starring opposite Jennifer Aniston in an untitled Andy Tennant comedy. Wow. Maniston and the director of Fool's Gold and Fools Rush In...that's about as far in that direction as you can go.
To toughen things up, Variety indicates that the movie is about a bounty hunter (Butler) who has to track down his ex-wife (guess who) after she skips bail. Yep: It's a married Midnight Run.
No thank you.

Gerard who?
Gerard Butler seems to like mixing it up and I think he is actually trying hard not to be type casted.
His next project which starts filming in January is the movie "Law Abiding Citizen" which he is producing and co-starring along with Jamie Foxx. The movie looks to be a thriller, Butler is playing a "psychopathic mastermind".
kColin, Colin, Colin. Yes, your manly men would like him to be in more "300" type movies...and we women love them ,too, with our gorgeous Gerard Butler...but many of us (men included as well as women)love romantic comedies! He is starring in "Game"...a testosterone testament in the fall...but critics such as you would love to say,"He's in too many action movies." In "Law Abiding Citizen" in which he will produce and co-star with Jamie Foxx...is a thriller. He did "Nim's Island"...a family film...and even critics made carping remarks at that. Everyone's darling , Johnnie Depp(I, a minority of one, thinks he's KEdwardian foppish)..keeps making dark films with Tim Burton...does anyone make a negative comment? No. As Gerry gets his leading man image cemented into the minds of producers..then he'll be able to do more serious dramas. He's British..and the Brits are willing to take even cameo roles just to continue their acting. It's our American actors who do the crappy films for money, more likely than not. I love Gerry's range...Leonard Maltin, whom I feel is a more acknowledged critic, said to me in an email:"I'm a fan of the talented Mr. Butler myself." Give him a break! BEfore "300" Gerry played a gangster, a chef, an archeologist or two, a vampire, a dragon slayer, a rock star, a gigolo, a farmer, a disfigured genius, a Viking, a Hun, a soccer /football player, a dead husband, a dad, a knight..shall I go on? An actor adts. Period. We women love him in all roles, but we do like his sexual tension in a rom/com. Chill out.
YEA - GO LIZ!!!! - DITTO!!!!
I totally agree with what Liz is saying, just one quick correction. Gerry Butler is SCOTTISH, not BRITISH.
And Scottish aren't British? They are not English, but I think they are British. Maybe I'm mistaken.
I have been a Gerry fan for years and I was so excited for him after 300, but I agree, I think he is slipping and trust me I love Gerry, I own just about everyone of his films and I love even the bad ones ( I am talking to you Attila). PS I Love You made me cringe and now a movie with Heigl and another with Aniston, oh me oh my.
I think Gerard is making an awesome effort at being a variety man. Sometimes playing that tough natured character can be boring, and there is nothing wrong with experimenting with different genres. Sure, he may be better at some more than others, but oh well.
We should support all his moves as his fans and try our best to enjoy what he brings to the audience.
He could park his shoes under my bed anytime!
Hey Colin... do you like Tom Hanks? Well... he is, what one would say, an accomplished actor, right? Then what the hell did he do with the Meg in Seattle? But hey... Tom's not Gerard you would say... Correct! Tom's got what? 2 Oscars? I guess being Sleepless in Seattle works! By the way Gerard, you should try Seattle! But God forbid you open your laptop to see You've Got Mail from... what the hell...? Is that you Meg? Hey Maggie... I'm Tom Hanks and I just got 2 Oscars! Sorry dear... can't do romantic comedies... they are just not... how should I say this... manly enough. In case you didn't know, Gentlemen is not where I go... I usually water trees while I battle the enemies with my left hand!
Come on Colin... let the guy play... let him be a grown up and play whatever he chooses... I would've appreciated you commenting on his acting or role preparation... but this? Man Card? Don't make us, your readers, you're nothing but a brute...
Yours truly,
The Romantic Spartan :)
Wow, really? Is this what we're gonna do, Colin? Bash not only Gerard Butler (who I think gave a wonderful performance in P.S. I Love You), but also future co-star Jennifer Aniston? I'm not exactly sure how to say this...oh, no wait a second, yeah I do! You are off by a million miles. The Romantic Spartan got it right on; he can do whatever he wants at this point and he is still going to be loved. He is a phenomenal actor (along with Aniston), and for you to start trashing their names because his films just aren't, as you so bluntly put it in your special misogynistic way, "manly"...totally and completely uncalled for. The story line for the movie sounds good and I think it will be well received by the GENERAL public, which clearly does not (and will probably never) include you.
