Evan Rachel Wood is Mary Jane in 'Spider-Man' Musical

Across the Universe director Julie Taymor is reuniting with at least one of her leads from that film for the Broadway production of Spider-Man: The Musical. Evan Rachel Wood told reporters that she has signed on to play Mary Jane Watson in the musical, which begins production next summer and is likely to hit the stage in 2010.

Taymor, whose career began in the theatre, has been pressing for Jim Sturgess, the breakout star of Across the Universe, to join the musical as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. According to Wood, producers are "still trying to persuade him."

IESB says that the actors workshopped the play with Taymor, so there's a good likelihood that they'll both join the cast. For Sturgess, the drawback might be that he has become a kind of overnight sensation between Universe and 21, and tying yourself to a Broadway play is a huge, time consuming commitment. Can he give up a couple of years to play Spider-Man on stage?

If he does, he'll be belting out tunes written by Bono and The Edge, which isn't a bad gig, although I'm still wondering how well a superhero musical will play. I'm also still wondering how Broadway will be doing financially in a year. Several shows have had to cut their runs short this year because of slumping ticket sales, including Spamalot, which has been a bit of a draw in New York for a while.

I suddenly have flashes of the Spider-Man musical at Universal Studios going through my head. Jesus God why!
