An R-Rated 'Robocop'? I'd Buy That For a Dollar

It has been one of the most-rumored remakes of the past few years and now director Darren Aronofsky adds another intriguing element that could raise a once-promising franchise back from the dead.

Aronofsky, whose The Wrestler just earned Golden Globe nominations for Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei, told a group of journalists that he wants to return Robocop to the realm of the R-rated, unlike the tepid sequels to Paul Verhoeven's hard-hitting original.

"If we can do it, it [can] definitely be rated R," Aronofsky said. "I mean, [it won't], necessarily, but we have that freedom."

That's good news, because there's no point being a candy-ass if you're making a new Robocop movie. What's the point? But the movie is still nowhere near the horizon. "Until there's a screenplay," the director cautioned, "there's nothing to really talk about. Until we're going, it just doesn't exist for me."

MGM, a studio that is pretty damn thirsty for consistent hits, wants the new Robocop in theaters in 2010. I have to admit, Aronofsky will bring something to the production; I'm just not sure what.
