New Official 'Sherlock Holmes' Photos

Warner Bros. has officially announced its 2009 lineup, which as we've learned in the past couple of months, is subject to change. But to help kick off a year that includes Watchmen, Terminator, Harry Potter, and more, the studio has released a few photos from a lot of its more highly-anticipated offerings, including Sherlock Holmes.

The new version of history's greatest detective is directed by Guy Ritchie, with Robert Downey, Jr. stepping into the iconic role opposite Jude Law's Watson. There have been a few unofficial photos released from the set of the film, which will forego a lot of the traditions of the character and make Holmes more of a bad ass, and to be honest, they weren't terribly convincing. Holmes resembled a drifter, wearing clothes that even Andre 3000 couldn't make work. Call me crazy, but I'd think Sherlock Holmes is one of those characters that, when you see him, you can recognize him. Like Superman. Or Jesus.

But now we have two new official pics, one where Holmes again looks like a Victorian chimney sweep, and another where he is apparently auditioning for the lead role in Bloodsport.

Kudos to Rope of Silicon

Fail. Sherlock Holmes will be released on November 20th.

The earlier shots of Downey looking like a "bum" were of Holmes in disguise and he is supposed to be an efficient bare-knuckle boxer and swordsman - all of which are features of the original stories, unlike the popular image of the pipe-smoking, deer-stalker and cape-wearing Holmes. I think your comments say more about your own cliched view of the character than they do about the new film.

As they have dressed Watson approprietly, I suppose they are going for the non-conformist slant on Holmes, with bohemian looks.

Hopefully Robert Downey will have a character to go with the clothes.

To be honest, I am much more suspicious of the director than the lead.

It is not cliched to presume Holmes would be wearing a deerstalker cap; that's a far more accurate description of him in the stories than as a boxer. Quick: Name me the many, many Sherlock Holmes stories in which he boxed. There's The Adventure of the Yellow Face, and it's mentioned again in The Sign of Four. Maybe I'm leaving one or two out, but even still, it was hardly the sort of thing he did throughout the novels and stories. You make it sound like every Holmes adventure ends with a brawl a la Every Which Way But Loose. He certainly didn't tangle like some goddamn action hero.

Even where it is mentioned in the stories it is not a primary thrust of the character. That's why it's called a pastime.

I have no problem with Ritchie or anyone else altering characters to fit a specific vision, but I'm not a fan of hijacking something iconic just to make money. And frankly, that seems more than a little bit possible here.

Is he wearing sunglasses? Colin, I am not as good as you at dating things, as you sometimes do when reviewing, but I have never seen a movie of the genre of Sherlock Holmes with anyone wearing sunglasses...am I missing something?

He is, and I don't think that's anachronistic. According to the mighty Wikipedia, tinted glasses were common around that time for people who had contracted syphilis. Apparently, they have light sensitivity issues. Let's hope that's not another of Ritchie's add-ons, he said half-jokingly...

They made Downey shave the mustache because he looked like Super Mario, apparently. And I think a fresh look at Holmes is needed. Besides, the role is perfect for RDJ. Maybe in his next film he can play Jesus or something. Bet that would make you happy.

It would make me happy if they stopped making movies about Jesus.
