Boston Critics Can't Decide, Pick 'Wall-E' and 'Slumdog'

The Boston Society of Film Critics distributed the wealth this year, with only four movies earning multiple awards, and none of those winning more than two categories. At the top of the list would be Wall-E and Slumdog Millionaire, which tied for Best Picture and picked up additional awards for animated film and editing, respectively.

Sean Penn and Mickey Rourke tied for Best Actor in Boston, and they're quickly rising to the top of that category. It will be hard for anyone save maybe Frank Langella (in a kind of combo award for lifetime achievement) to have a shot at winning the Oscar over those two reformed or reforming bad boys. Best Actor seems to be the most cemented among the major categories, with the three I just mentioned and Brad Pitt extremely likely nominees.

Over the past decade, this group has voted the way the Academy has for Best Picture only two times, in 2006 and 2007. If you want to know which group to follow, that would be Dallas-Fort Worth, which has picked eight of the last ten winners, missing only 2005 and 2006, when Crash and The Departed beat Brokeback Mountain and United 93.

Here's the 2008 Boston Film Critics Society Awards.

Great to see Paranoid Park given some love! It is the best film of 2008 I've seen so far!
