Kenneth Branagh Opens Up About 'Thor'

We should give Kenneth Branagh a little leeway with Thor. To begin with, sweet Jebus, that's a tough movie for anyone to make, especially in the grand slam arena of comic book flicks these days. And then let's not forget that Branagh hasn't directed a Hollywood movie in 15 years (Mary Shelley's Frankenstein), and he's never made a film with a budget of more than $50 million.

So to call it an unpredictable choice by Marvel would be fairly accurate. But Branagh does have a pretty recognizable brand: He makes great Shakespeare movies. How that and Norse mythology will play out, I have no idea. But he's very excited by the opportunity.

"There’s science fiction and science fact and fantasy all woven into one. It’s based on Norse legends which Marvel sort of raided in a brilliant way," the triple threat told MTV. As for why he took the extremely challenging job in the first place, Branagh replied, "To work on a story about one of the immortals, Gods, extraordinary beings, inter-dimensional creatures."

But he stopped short of giving away specifics, including casting. As with all of the superhero movies, there has been and will be plenty of speculation about who will play the title character until we hear from Marvel, after which, that selection will be debated for months on end. The most recent rumors have Scottish actor Kevin McKidd in the running, but Branagh wouldn't comment about him specifically.

"There’s been lots of talk [about casting] - I sound like a politician - but we are too early at this stage. We’re getting the story and the visual effects together and all of that is very exciting. Someone sensational is going to play the part but it is early days."
