Monday, December 15, 2008 at 3:28AM Original 'Blade' Director to Remake 'The Crow'
Director
Stephen Norrington will return to cineplexes
after a lengthy absence with, of all things, a remake of
The Crow.
Norrington's last movie was League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and that
about sums it up, doesn't it?
The director told
Variety how his version will differ from the
1994 original, directed by
Alex Proyas, saying, "Whereas Proyas’ original
was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie will be realistic, hard-edged
and mysterious, almost documentary-style." Sounds cool. I don't know what the
hell it means, but it sounds cool.

Norrington recently inked a deal to write and direct The Crow, which is based on the James O'Barr comic book. There's no information immediately available about when The Crow will go into production or be released.
Let's hope he sticks with the project. After all, the first Blade movie was a long time ago. Norrington was in the mix for the new Clash of the Titans remake at one point, but admits he was "unable to excite Warner Bros. with my take, or influence the screenplay to any comfortable extent." Well, see, that I understand.
The first Crow film was a major hit that was also notorious for the on-set accident that caused the death of star Brandon Lee.
I have to admit, of all the new crop of remakes and after-the-fact sequels we've seen, I have zero problem with a new Crow movie, and Norrington, though he hasn't proven a whole lot as a director over the years, could be the right guy for the job. Or at least, he could be a right guy for the job.
The comic always had two things going for it: Major movie potential and a ton of fans. And it's not that the Proyas version is bad, but I think it could be updated successfully. Some people will hate this news, but if they can reinvent comic books every few years, why not comic book movies?
