Wheels Already Turning on 'Terminator 5'

While news of a fifth Terminator movie is no surprise - what would be the point of doing the fourth one, which completes nothing, if you don't continue with at least one more? - you may be surprised or even disappointed to hear that McG seems to be the director of record for that film, too.

Variety reports that Halcyon, the company that owns the rights to the franchise, is working with McG on the cinquel, which was announced at the Dubain International Film Festival. Gee, I wonder if that event is ostentatious at all.

Halcyon bosses Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek confess that they actually hadn't begun thinking of making a fifth film in the lucrative franchise until reaction to footage from the fourth, next summer's Terminator Salvation, was so positive.

"We feel the time is now to start shaping the next part of this," said Kubicek in Dubai. The company also announced that the new Terminator videogame would come out the same day as Salvation, May 22nd.

Personally, I think McG is on his way to something really cool here. It's the first time we've seen the future in this series, at least for longer than a war-torn few minutes here and there. All the pics and trailers look appropriately grim, but there's still something new about it all. So, a tip of the hat, sir.

As for the fifth film, it's tentatively slated for a 2011 release and we can assume for now that it would also star Christian Bale. I don't know what they're thinking for a title or anything, but if they call it Terminator's Christmas Vacation or Terminator and Norah's Infinite Playlist, you heard it here first.
