Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 4:48AM Phoenix Critics Favor 'Slumdog Millionaire'
As a member of the Phoenix Film Critics Society, I can
tell you that I have disagreed with our picks for Best Picture and all the rest
as much as I have agreed. And this year, by and large, this list is pretty
solid.
Now, the Society has a lot more categories than most
other organizations of its kind, so we won't share all of the awards with you.
There are over 20, and if you care to read them all, head over to the brand new
PFCS website,
where the final tally is waiting for you.
Slumdog Millionaire
Sean Penn - Milk

Once again, a lot of the same names keep popping up in familiar places, which should start to tell you something. There are a couple wrinkles, like In Bruges winning three awards and Marisa Tomei picking up Best Supporting Actress, but every group has its wild cards, I suppose.

This hype gives me such curiosity to see some of these films. It's just so hard to see the promise in some of them too. The PFCS are looking pretty spiffy these days though =)
Pretty spiffy? The PFCS does this thing each week where they pick a "Phoenix Favorite Film," naming the best new film opening that week. 'Slumdog' lost out to Bolt the week it opened and the PFCS liked Wanted over WALL-E the week it opened. And one of their highest rated films of 2008 was a cheap tearjerker named Under the Same Moon. If they were an honest bunch, they'd own up to their lousy weekly picks and have Bolt, Wanted, and Under the Same Moon on their top ten list--instead of scrambling at the end of the year to make their list look like everybody else's.
