Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 12:05AM 'Twilight' Sequel to Open November 20, 2009
Tough to say whether or not speeding up the process like
this will help the finished product or not, but you can't really blame Summit
Entertainment for wanting more
Twilight, pronto. After all, the studio has no
other calling cards in the minds of the audience, no franchises people are dying
to see other than the one with a horny but chaste teenage girl dating a vampire
100 years her senior.

So with the announcement today in
Variety that
New Moon will be released November 20, 2009,
the same weekend that saw Twilight explode at the box office this year, Summit
is letting it be known once and for all that it is going to play the hand it's
been dealt.

The big difference here, and where Summit may be acting with a wee bit of arrogance, is that November 20th is already staked out by Sherlock Holmes, the animated Planet 51, and the new Three Stooges movie, which will probably die a miserable box office death. So is the studio engaging in a little Cuban Missle Crisis action here, waiting to see who blinks first? Would Warner Bros. move Sherlock Holmes to avoid the head-to-head battle?
No doubt, if everything stays where it is, that's bad news for New Moon. I highly doubt the sequel will make $70 million in its opening weekend, anyway, but with a lot of competition, you can make a safe bet that it won't happen. Just something to watch over the next few months.
In keeping with its fast pace in preparing the second film, Summit announced new director Chris Weitz over the weekend, a week after it acknowledged that Catherine Hardwicke would not return.

I sense a "Prince Caspian" type situation here- they're trying to create a franchise for something in which only one book is truly popular (like how "Lion Witch And Wardrobe is far more popular than Caspian). I also feel this way about the upcoming "Angels and Demons" movie. "New Moon" certainly has an opportunity to be successful and possibly even an improvement on the first film, but looking at the way this movie is being rushed into production....doesn't seem too likely.
New moon will be definitly be just as big as Twilight. Almost anyone who has read Twilight has also read New Moon. While I'll admit that the movie did not live up to my expectations, it is still neat to see the book come to life and compare it to the book. Any 14 year old girl who is obsessed with Twilight will also see New Moon...as well as everyone else.
I Highly doubt that the second movie will receive any less attention. Twilight is a strong series of four books, and the first movie was taken in by every fan. Why won't the rest of the series follow in the same way?
It is a great film, although it is like a soap opera of vampires, it doesn't have the real essence of true vampire legend.
