'Mamma Mia!' DVD Sells 2.25 Million in One Day
Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at 4:10PM
At a certain point, we're all going to have to recognize
that how improbably the run is for
Mamma Mia! this year. Yes, The Dark Knight
made a billion dollars, but it was fueled by A+ marketing - probably the best,
most consistent movie marketing campaign I've ever seen - and the unfortunate
death of Heath Ledger, which certainly had something to do with ticket sales,
great movie or not.
But Mamma Mia! opened the very same day, made a
respectable amount of money in its American debut (against the biggest opening
ever), a healthy sum over its theatrical run, and completely dominated the world
stage like no other female-oriented movie has since Titanic. There are a
few movies that have made over half a billion this year, but in terms of
overseas performance, only two movies all year have made more than the
adaptation of the ABBA-laced musical. Let's also not lose track of this being
the only film all year to make 1000% its budget.

The news keeps stacking in its favor with the details of the DVD release last week. Universal reports that it sold 2.25 million copies of Mamma Mia! yesterday. That's $30 million. Last week, The Dark Knight sold about 3 million copies, the most ever for a single day. In the U.K., the musical became the fastest-selling DVD ever, scorching Titanic by over half a million units. Of course, it's also the biggest film ever in the United Kingdom, so that's not a huge surprise. But I don't think when the summer box office predictions were rolling out, too many people had Mamma Mia! in the top six worldwide.
Now, just imagine how many more DVDs it would sell if Pierce Brosnan could sing.
