Brian Grazer Explains, Spoils 'Nottingham'
Monday, December 1, 2008 at 6:18PM
I thought it was genius to tell the Robin Hood story from
another perspective, that Robin Hood actually was the bad guy. That's a great
way to change a classic around. And I thought casting
Russell Crowe
as the
Sheriff of Nottingham was another good idea.
Then, after the production was told
to stop in the name of love (or greener foliage), we learned that Russell Crowe
would or might play both
Nottingham and Robin Hood. And that, again, is
a stroke of genius.But perhaps we've given
Ridley Scott
et al too much credit.
Brian Grazer, the high-haired Imagine
Entertainment honcho tells
MTV that there are certain facts we need to
know. I must warn you, this is a pretty sizable spoiler, so if you like it
fresh, stop reading.

“The two role confusion is that what Robin Hood does is he sees Nottingham in battle very early in the movie and Nottingham dies. And Robin Hood takes over the identity of Nottingham. That's how it plays out.”
So wait, now...what? I mean, I guess if you're reinventing it, you can do whatever the hell you want to, but does that mean that Crowe is really Robin Hood instead of Nottingham? And where does this assumption of identity take place, early or later in the film? I guess it could still work - although I don't know why it would need to unfold the way Grazer describes it - but I may actually be more confused now than I was before.

Sounds a bit crap as a premise, bu I guess it depends on what Robin does as the Sheriff. If it had been 10 years ago I would have had complete faith in Ridley Scott making it worthwhile, but as his films have been playing recently, I will reserve my judgment.
I thought the idea of having one guy play both characters was fantastic, but if one of them dies before they ever get down to business, who gives a damn? So maybe Robin becomes Nottingham at the end of the film or something, which is a cop-out, but at least we could see some of the good storyline.
