HBO, Bay, Bruckheimer Snort Up 'Cocaine Cowboys'

I wonder what happened to the feature film version of Cocaine Cowboys. For a time, it was going to star DiCaprio and Wahlberg, or so the rumors ran. Peter Berg was going to direct it...it was set.

Now, that same project, or at least a project using the same name and telling the same story, will become an HBO movie instead, with Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer on board as executive producers. The Hollywood Reporter says that it Warner Bros. TV will handle the day-to-day production of the film, which is Bruckheimer's first pay cable endeavor and will be the first time WBTV and HBO work together, though they're part of the same conglomerate.

There's no mention in the article if this is the same project or not, but both the feature idea and this one are inspired by the 2006 documentary Cocaine Cowboys by Billy Corben. My hunch is that this is different, because Berg and Wahlberg were set to produce the other version back when news broke about the project in February.

The documentary covers the early days of the Miami drug traffic, focusing on Jon Roberts, a Vietnam vet who became a dealer at the height of the Florida cocaine trade.

I wonder if both projects will still go ahead as planned or if we'll just see the HBO version now. It's been months since the other one was updated, so perhaps all parties involved moved on to other things.
