'The New York Times' Gives Us Three Top Ten Lists

It's been a strange time for movie critics. Many major newspapers and chains of newspapers, along with both weekly and monthly magazines, have shifted their coverage of films to either a single critic or fewer critics, and the Associated Press recently capped movie review lengths at 500 words. But The Old Gray Lady marches on, with three New York Times critics chiming in on the year that was at the movies: A.O. Scott, Manohla Dargis, and Stephen Holden. Their lists are a little more varied than most, a by-product of seeing a great many films that never find distribution anywhere but New York. So when or if you see a title you don't recognize, don't automatically assume they're just being snobs. What's curious about their lists as that while several movies pop up on two of the three countdowns of the ten best of the year, like Wall-E and Milk, only Happy-Go-Lucky is a consensus pick.A.O.
