Now Stephen Chow May Not Play Kato in 'Green Hornet'
Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at 2:30PM
We were disheartened to hear last week that
Stephen Chow
wouldn't be directing the upcoming but long-in-the-pipeline film adaptation of
The Green Hornet. But now he may be out of the
project altogether.
Chow told the
Associated Press that he if he directed
Green Hornet, he couldn't then make a superhero comedy with Jack Black for
two years, adding that the timing may not be right for that kind of story in two
years. Well, gee, I guess that explains the "creative differences" between the
writer-director-star of Kung Fu Hustle and the brass over at Columbia.

We wondered how it would play out with the former director still attached as a cast member, with Chow still on board as Kato to Seth Rogen's Green Hornet. But now we may not need to wonder. Whether it's just the heat of the moment or a legitimate concern is hard to gauge, but Chow told the AP he's not sure he even wants to play Kato now, saying it depends on his schedule.
Frankly, I couldn't give a damn about Seth Rogen as Green Hornet. Give me Stephen Chow as Kato and I'm happy. Give me Stephen Chow directing as well, and I've got really high hopes. Take both of those things away, and I'm back to not giving a damn.

Wasn't Kevin Smith the father of this project? It explains how Rogen got ahold of it, although I once heard that Jason Lee would be the Hornet (before he started bathing himself in Chipmunk cash).
Still, I'm with you Boyd. Stephen Chow and all his Kung Fu Hustle-y goodness is a much more interesting proposition. It has been far too long since we've heard from this awesome import stateside.
And I'm not sure that Mr. Black can do Mr. Chow's brand of stylized comedic violence justice...
Can he?
After all, is anyone talking about Portnoy this awards season?
Smith and his producer/partner Scott Mosier said on their podcast that they felt they weren't right for the movie and bailed. Smith said he didn't know how to direct action and Mosier didn't want the hastle of "too many cooks in the kitchen" when it comes to producing such a huge project. I didn't understand the prospect of Seth Rogen, and I never will. That's like Rosie O'Donnell as Betty Rubble.
