'Dark Knight' Won't Hit China, Loses Top Spot on DVD

A double dose of relatively bad news hit The Dark Knight this week, although for a movie with its performance, it was due to have a downturn sooner or later.

Variety reports that Warner Bros. will not be releasing the film in China, with speculation pointing to the scenes shot in Hong Kong as a reason to avoid the government censors.

"Based on a number of pre-release conditions that are being attached to The Dark Knight as well as cultural sensitivities to some elements of the film, we have opted to forego a theatrical release of the film in China," the studio said in a release.

The move will stall the film's near-record box office run overseas, as it looks to become one of the top two or three movies ever made in terms of international ticket sales.

Elsewhere, The Dark Knight has been toppled by Mamma Mia! on DVD sales charts this week. The Batman movie is still the year's top selling disc, with over 13.5 million units sold, but in its second week on shelves, the adaptation of the ABBA-based musical outsold The Dark Knight by about 15%.
