Sunday, December 28, 2008 at 6:00AM Listen to Oscar Conteding Songs from 'Slumdog' and 'The Wrestler'
Last month, we featured a way that you could
listen to the score for
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button online. The studio was kind
enough to send me the soundtrack after our little mention here, which was very nice, and
indeed,
Alexandre Desplat's score is magnificent and he's one of the
strongest composers working in film at the moment, as well as being one of my favorites and
the most versatile.
You should check out the score even without seeing the film, although like most movie
music, it's better in the proper context.
In another category, you can now preview two potentisl Best Song nominees, and among movies
not named High School Musical, I think they stand a very good chance. I don't think
High School Musical has great or even remotely memorable or compelling songs, just
that Disney submitted 11 songs that are in the running for the five nominations, and Disney
always does well in this category.

These two songs come from
The Wrestler and
Slumdog Millionaire, which are the two films making Oscar
pushes for Fox Searchlight. This is great for people in parts of the country where The
Wrestler hasn't yet opened; most major cities have a few screens showing Slumdog
at this point.
"The Wrestler" is a new song written and performed by Bruce
Springsteen, as a favor to Mickey Rourke. I've said before that one of my pet peeves is
when they put a great song over the closing credits and never use it anywhere else. I guess
that's really common, but if I were the writer, I wouldn't love for being to be in a hurry
to leave the theater while my song was playing.
The same kind of holds true for
"Jaiho" from Slumdog Millionaire, written by A.R. Rahman
and Gulzar. It's also at the end of the film, but at least there's that song and dance
sequence inspired by Bollywood. Nobody's leaving their seats when that's on.
So listen to them both because they're both worth it. Even though I'm about a month away
from predicting the Academy Award nominees and winners, things are shaping up quite well
for Slumdog, and because it's not just an excellent film but also because it's so
different than the other nominees, I think it has a terrific shot at winning the music
awards plus about three or four others, including the Big Two.
