'Rome' Star McKidd Says He Still Might Be 'Thor'

Perhaps it's because watching Ray Stevenson as Frank Castle reminded me that Dolph Lundgren really is the best Punisher, but I wish that Marvel Entertainment wasn't what it is today so that they could make a halfway-cheesy version of Thor and it would star Triple H. He would bring a Lundgren-esque quality to the role that Marvel just isn't looking for today.

What they are looking for, though, may still be Kevin McKidd, who co-starred with Stevenson in the HBO series Rome. The stout Scot told IGN he's still officially a contender for the role despite "a lot of back and forth" about the project.

One aspect of this that is not confusing is who's directing; we know that will be Kenneth Branagh, an admittedly strange choice that could also prove brilliant down the line. The prospect of working with Branagh seems particularly interesting to McKidd.

But Thor is, as we've claimed here multiple times, one of the trickiest heroes in all of the Marvel Universe to transfer to film. If it's Kevin McKidd - hypothetically - would we as an audience accept the partially disabled medical student alter ego? If they don't address that part of the story, then won't Kenneth Branagh have his hands full with creating a believable Asgard? And just how will it all help point us to The Avengers?

They're all questions that need answers soon since the film is scheduled for a summer 2010 release. I think McKidd is as good a legitimate option as we've heard for Thor, but there are a lot of technical issues that I think could trip this one up.

Good idea. They could put him on stilts and make him wear a padded suit. The rest would just come naturally, right?
