So Moriarty Will Be in 'Sherlock Holmes' After All

It would seem a pity if, after all this time and effort devoted to reinventing Sherlock Holmes, his archrival wasn't invited to the party. And according to the film's Mark Strong, the nefarious Prof. Moriarty will in fact be a part of the film. Kinda.

"Moriarty's in it... but you don't really see him," says Strong, the great actor who has livened up Body of Lies and Rocknrolla in recent months. "I think he's there because if the franchise carries on, there's a possibility that he will appear in a larger guise."

Ah, the old appear-later-in-a-larger-guise routine. This reminds me of Ernst Blofeld, the Bond villain you never saw in From Russia with Love and Thunderball. It works in theory for Moriarty, but I'm not 100% sold we're going to get a franchise.

So what about Strong, who is so good as a bad guy? Isn't he a villain here? "(F)or the purposes of this one and the detective narrative, I'm the guy that Sherlock's after, Lord Blackwood," he tells IGN. And he's a cultist/Satanist lord who is the ultimate cad."

Ah, the old Satanist-lord-as-the-ultimate-cad routine.

I think I may have mentioned this before: Watch Body of Lies (and you should anyway; it's pretty good) and pay attention to Strong's performance. Everything about it is a better Sherlock Holmes than what I imagine Robert Downey concocting. I love Downey, but I just have a feeling Holmes will be a little too radicalized in his hands. I think Strong would have been an ideal Holmes and Downey - maybe - a better Moriarty.

But it's too late for all that now, I suppose; Sherlock Holmes is in production and will be released on November 20th.
