'The Dark Knight' Still Headed to IMAX

There seems to be a bit of misinformation one way or the other regarding the proposed IMAX re-release of The Dark Knight. Superhero Hype gets the credit and the blame, first announcing that Warner Bros. would not pursue a mega-screen push at the beginning of the year.

That set the internet on fire with bloggers and message board folk thinking the movie would never catch Titanic. Well, it should be noted that it would take a miraculous IMAX run for that to even be a possibility. There simply aren't enough theaters to make up the $70 million difference. I mean, $70 million is more than the movie made in IMAX the first time, and by January, everyone will own the DVD.

But with the coveted billion-dollar-baby designation still out there - and with The Dark Knight one of only four movies to ever cross that milestone in international box office if it makes a few more million - Superhero Hype now says that the studio contacted its editors to say the plan for a re-release was still happening.

Why the confusion? You got me. But the last we heard, an official announcement with all the details if forthcoming. The only question mark I have is why the re-release is only happening in IMAX, and why it's only happening in January. I get the last-minute Oscar push and all that, but I still think Halloween was a golden time for this to get more juice in theaters.

Still, putting it on a few hundred screens as a special event won't hurt, but January is Hollywood's "Bring Out Your Dead" month, so The Dark Knight would have a puncher's chance to make coin in that environment.

As of now, however, it appears that The Dark Knight will get an IMAX-only run, and it will be in January.
