Scorsese to Make Another Boston Mob Movie?

Are the Departed coming back again? The Boston Herald reports that Martin Scorsese, Oscar-winning writer William Monahan, and producer Graham King will make another Boston gangster movie together.

"Now don't breathe a word of this. Because nobody's supposed to know," writes Herald reporters of the acquisition of the rights to the story of hitman John Martorano. "Scorsese met secretly with the Winter Hill Gang hitman at an Italian restaurant in the Back Bay while The Departed director was in town making Shutter Island.

Martorano served 14 years in prison for killing 20 people, which you have to admit, is a pretty lenient per-murder average. He later became a snitch, or if you prefer, a government witness who helped expose an illegal relationship between the FBI and his boss, James "Whitey" Bulger, an inspiration for the Jack Nicholson character in The Departed.

For good reason, the very hint that this story will be turned into multiplex fare has not been greeted fondly by members of the police department in Boston and the family of his many victims.

“It’s disgusting,” remarked retired state police Colonel Tom Foley. “Nobody should be capitalizing on what he did. It’s wrong and it sickens me.”
