Terrific New 'Coraline' Featurettes

I think we might be in for a pretty special year of animated films in 2009. We've got the big, splashy major studio offerings like Up from Pixar and Monsters vs. Aliens from DreamWorks, and the less inventive but still unbelievably successful Ice Age movies will spawn a threequel in the summer.

And then there's Focus Features, which has 9, a film that looks like it might be a real milestone in film animation, and Coraline, the new stop motion animation/3-D creation from Henry Selick, director of The Nightmare Before Christmas. Suddenly, that Best Animated Oscar doesn't seem like a foregone conclusion the way it has in recent years.

We found some featurettes for Coraline over at MovieWeb, and I thought they were pretty interesting, on the whole. There's a hell of a lot of work that goes into making one shot of one scene of a film like this, and some of these videos illustrate that point.

I agree 2009 may be a big year for animation, but also I am predicting a huge step forward for the 3D format. Audiences seem to be loving the modern technology. Most animation is being formatted for 3D nowadays (if I remember correctly, Pixar has stated that Up will be it's last exclusively 2D release). There are also a handful of major live-action releases on the way, and I am interested to see what James Cameron brings to the table at the end of the year.
