Depp Does 'Dante'
Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at 6:06PM
Despite his staggering ascension over the past five
years to the ranks of Hollywood's biggest box office draws,
Johnny Depp
has maintained his independent leanings. And this is another example.
Through his production company, Infinitum Nihil, Depp
has acquired the rights to the
Nick Tosches novel, In the Hand of Dante,
in which Depp will most likely star. There's a clue to the type of material
we're dealing with in the title of the book.

According to Variety, it "revolves around Dante's masterwork The Divine Comedy, and tells parallel storylines involving Dante in 14th-century Italy as he tries to complete the work, and a contemporary storyline involving Tosches, who is asked to authenticate what might be Dante's original manuscript."
The report indicates that Depp would play Tosches, and no, he's not as handsome as Johnny Depp, so you don't need to Google him, ladies. But doesn't that character sound a bit like the one Depp played in The Ninth Gate? Tosches wouldn't be the first famed writer Depp has brought to life on screen. He's played a variation on Hunter S. Thompson in Fear and Loathing and will play Thompson in name in the upcoming Rum Diary, also an Infinitum Nihil production.
As for Tosches, he's written some great books, including The Devil and Sonny Liston, which absolutely should be turned into a movie. That'd be a tough adaptation, but it would be worth it.
