Shia Needs Surgery, Drops 'Dark Fields'
Saturday, December 6, 2008 at 6:05AM
Shia Labeouf
will have to bail on
Neil Burger's upcoming thriller,
Dark Fields,
after doctors advised the actor that his hand requires more surgery. As you'll
no doubt recall, LaBeouf's hand was severely injured in an auto accident this
summer, and
Transformers 2
wrote the injury into the film because there was no way to get around it.
A source tells
Fox News, ""Shia's hand is totally shattered, it's much worse than anyone
thought."

Dark Fields is an adaptation of a 2002 novel by Alan Glynn, centering on a former cocaine user (which would have been Shia, if the report is accurate) who becomes introduced to a new kind of superdrug that propels his career essentially from the mail room to the corner office.
The project sounds like it has a lot of merit, and I've liked Burger's The Illusionist and The Lucky Ones. Both of those films are terribly different from each other, and Dark Fields will take him in a completely new direction again. But who's the Shia understudy? This sounds like a job for Zac Efron...

I don't know if your joking about Zac Efron or not, but he would be lucky to get that role to expand his range and rep. I bet he'd do well.
Too bad Rob Pattinson isn't available
No way anyone they get will be as awesome as Shia! This sucks.
