Keanu Reeves One of '47 Ronin'

Keanu Reeves, who this weekend has a remake of
The Day the Earth Stood Still arriving in
theaters, has signed up for a new period piece for Universal called 47 Ronin.
It is not a sequel to the Robert De Niro flick, Ronin, although it
would be cool to see 47 car chases like that in one movie.
Actually,
Variety says that it is "based on the true tale
of a band of samurai swordsmen who avenged the death of their master in 18th
century Japan." The attack took place in December
1702, although the film won't look the part. Reportedly, it will throw in some
Lord of the Rings-style fantasy elements with the type of battle
sequences you might find in Gladiator.

Chris Morgan, who co-wrote Wanted, seems like a pretty good choice to handle the rather risky combination of influences. It has the air of something that will either be brilliant...or absolutely awful.
There's no director yet, although the production is on pace to begin sometime next year, after Morgan completes the script, which will be tailored to fit Reeves, who is playing one of the samurai, probably an important one.
And, yes, in case you're wondering, Reeves is half-Asian. And half FBI...agent.
