Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at 3:07AM 'The New Yorker' Names Its Ten Best Films of 2008
Another day, another Best Of list from a film critic or
group of critics. Here's the top ten films of 2008 as determined by David Denby
of
The New Yorker. Of the three we've seen from individual critics (Roger Ebert
and Richard Corliss being the other two), I'd say it's the most mainstream.
Yes, it's still riddled with smaller flicks, but it's a
mostly Oscar-friendly list, certainly in comparison to the others. He actually admits that it's mainstream, by the way. And on the
plus side, at least he doesn't mention Speed
Racer like the guy from Time magazine.

You can read Denby's rationale at The New Yorker, but I thought I'd mention his logic for I've Loved You So Long, because it seems to fly in the face of a list like this: "Not a great film, but a great performance from Kristen Scott-Thomas as a woman who has committed a terrible crime and then returns to French bourgeois society."
Not a great film? Well, what's the point of that?

So Vicky Cristina Barcelona is a better film than Slumdog Millionaire? I would expect nothing less from the snobs at the New Yorker.
None of those are better than Slumdog Millionaire.
