Friday, April 11, 2008 at 5:00PM It's Official: The Boys Don't Love 'Mandy Lane'
It was supposed to be the breakout movie for Amber Heard. Instead, that honor went to Never Back Down, which has to be tremendously frustrating for her.Ever since it debuted at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane has been an impotent cause for geekboys everywhere. First, there was the May 2007 release date. Then there was I believe a late summerish-early fall release date. Then came the seemingly more profitable Spring 2008 opening, which has now become the August 2008 opening, according to Jo Blo.
I'll say this for Senator International, the company distributing this film: With a track record like this, you ought to be out of business.
Mandy Lane seems to have fans wherever it goes, be it Toronto, London, or Austin, and yet, the time is seemingly never right to release it. Here's a rule of thumb: There's never a bad time to release a good movie. That leads me to one of two conclusions:
1 - Mandy Lane is awful
2 - Senator International loves the thought of tax write-offs
Given the dreary state of horror movies, it's unlikely that the buzz about Mandy would be unwelcome among the hack and slash crowd. So, we choose option B, Bob.
The story's pretty cool and very reminiscent of a gory campfire tale: The good girl comes back from summer vacation as the school's hottest student, and on a weekend trip with all her new popular friends, bodies start to vanish...
Will it ever be released theatrically? Is August 2008 just another ruse? The crazy thing is, director Jonathan Levine, who sold his film The Wackness at Sundance this year, seemed pleased with the direction the Mandy Lane distribution was headed just a few months ago, saying, "The experience of Mandy Lane -- taking it from the Weinsteins to Senator Entertainment-- was like night and day, and we want to find a home for The Wackness that will be like the home Mandy Lane eventually found."
On second thought...
