Sunday, April 27, 2008 at 11:00AM Box Office - 'Baby Mama' Spanks 'Harold & Kumar'
Despite a fairly close Friday at the box office, Baby Mama put some distance between itself and its closest competitor, taking the top spot over Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay by a cool $4 million. The Tina Fey-Amy Poehler comedy put up solid but unspectacular numbers all weekend long, while Harold & Kumar was strongest on Friday, slumping a bit the rest of the way.
Oh, and this will be the last sub-$20 million opening for a number one film for nearly four months; next week, Iron Man leads a parade of big budget blockbusters designed to pull in $50 - $100 million in their first three days.
The Forbidden Kingdom and Forgetting Sarah Marshall continue their neck-and-neck battle since opening day on April 18th.
Elsewhere in the top ten, the new release Deception didn't fool anybody, making just over $2 million, which was "good enough" for a tenth-place debut. And Prom Night has roughly doubled its $20 million budget, and it's not out of the question that the horror remake could approach $45 million, which is a great number for a film in a recently lifeless genre.
And Jake Long became the first overall pick of the NFL draft. I only mention this because his rookie contract with the Miami Dolphins is worth more cash than the top five movies grossed at the box office this weekend.
The Top Five:
1 - Baby Mama ($18.3 million)
2 - Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay ($14.6 million)
3 - The Forbidden Kingdom ($11.2 million)
4 - Forgetting Sarah Marshall ($11 million)
5 - Nim's Island ($4.5 million)
