Box Office - 'Iron Man' Earns $50 Million More
Sunday, May 11, 2008 at 11:32AM
Adhering to conventional wisdom,
Iron Man repeated as
the number one film in the country this weekend, adding a cool $50 million to
its stack of money, according to estimates published at
Box Office Mojo. The big
weekend puts Iron Man less than a week away from $200 million, and makes it the
top grossing film of 2008, a title that probably won't last but another month.

What about
Speed Racer? We chronicled its Friday
doldrums, but the high-speed Wachowski movie rebounded nicely on Saturday and
Sunday, at least by its own standard. It still didn't make anywhere near what
Warner Bros. would be comfortable with, but it only lost 10% of its audience
Saturday to Sunday, where most films will see at least a 20% dropoff on day
three. The still-sluggish Speed Racer did manage a second place finish,
overcoming
What Happens in Vegas... with Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher.
There was a lot more competition for Vegas than anything
else, however; every movie that held down a spot between number three and number
seven in the weekend rundown was a comedy, with Vegas,
Made of Honor,
Baby Mama,
Forgetting Sarah Marshall and
Harold and Kumar all faring pretty well; only
Made
of Honor and Vegas have failed to turn profits, and both seem likely to do so
within the next month of release.
As for Iron Man, the Marvel superhero flick is now up to
$177 million, but its tumble from week one to week two was not as drastic as
second weekends from last May, when Spider-Man 3, Shrek the Third and
Pirates of
the Caribbean all lost 55% of its crowd or more, and they went on to be the top
grossing films of 2007. Iron Man lost just under half its audience. Had
Prince Caspian been in the lineup this weekend
instead of Speed Racer, that percentage would have probably been much greater,
but Spidey lost 61% of its audience going up against no major competition in
week two.
Iron Man will probably be sitting comfortably at $225
million or after next weekend, and might be closing in on $250 million through
Memorial Day.

These numbers are not surprising, because Iron Man is a good movie, and Spider Man 3 and Speed Racer both sucked.

Yeah. I'm a bit surprised I have a spammer after only two days of being up and running. I'm kind of proud, actually.
