Another 'Dark Knight' Commercial is Ready for Prime Time

Lest we forget through all of this Iron Man hubbub that the real comic book hero of the summer is Batman. Or is that just that the real comic book experience of the summer is The Dark Knight?

Actively talked about for the better part of a year, even more in the past few months, for a variety of reasons, The Dark Knight probably won't be the year's box office king; Batman Begins stalled in the low $200 millions. But since it is probably the number one movie on most wish lists, it has a chance to do that kind of damage.

It also has a real chance of being absolutely incredible. The only hesitation I have is that The Dark Knight might have too many characters for its stated purpose. Overabundances of characters are fine in the comic realm, because you have 40 years or so to play everything out. Movies are a different beast, so you have to be careful adding pieces to the puzzle when everything has to be concluded - at least to some degree - within 150 minutes.

It's not a big concern, mind you, but my only one.

There's a new TV commercial for The Dark Knight, of interest if you're a collector or something.

There's been plenty of tongue-wagging about whether Heath Ledger will get an Oscar nomination. Well, even though Jack Nicholson did not receive one for playing the same character and no male actor has as many nominations or wins as Mad Jack, I think you can bet that Ledger will. Here's my reasoning: Heath was better in Brokeback than Phil Hoffman was in Capote. Toby Jones was a better Capote in Infamous for that matter, no offense to Hoffman. The Oscar folks love playing payback with the trophies. And it's already such a high profile performance that I think that helps its chances.

Plus, back in 1989, comic book movies weren't being made. Batman was a total novelty. I think with as much influence as they have now, coupled with sci-fi and fantasy movies (*cough * Lord of the Rings), that the Academy is likely to take a great performance in a comic book movie more seriously now than ever before.

I predicted the posthumous nomination the day he died. I don't think the Academy's "payback" generosity will extend beyond that though, unless the performance is truly spectacular and overshadows everything else.

The Mask at the beginning is cool, the Dark Knight planting on the roof of the car is strong. Doesn't seem to say much, so it may be a good movie.
