Is This Our First Glimpse at the 'Thundercats' Movie?

Is this really the first look at the big screen adaptation of Thundercats? Filmofilia has done some good research on this front, first unearthing what appears to be a bust of one of the characters from Thank Gilligan It's Safe For Work and then checking an official website for the movie, which indicates that 'Cats will be here on July 11, 2011. So mark your calendars.

What's most puzzling about Thundercats is the decision to make a live action version of the 1980s cartoon series. I mean, I simply don't think that's going to work. Maybe G.I. Joe will be the litmus test on that, or maybe you'd argue that Transformers already was, but Thundercats seems a little different to me in one respect: They're giant effing cats.

I wouldn't be so pessimistic about it if not for the fact that it's a July release, which means it will be tremendously expensive and will be marketed aggressively. And I have a hard time falling in love with the concept of guys in cat suits making war.

Plus, I think animation has turned such a corner over the past decade that it doesn't have to be relegated to just family films, and if there's a big property on the docket that might be able to benefit from sticking to its guns, I think it would have to be this one.

And if Day Lewis wants to do a musical so bad, this would be the perfect vehicle! Just think, Thunder "Cats"- the Musical. Day Lewis as Lion-O could be a much more violent version of Mr. Mephistopheles.

Now that's the movie I want to see!
