Nicolas Cage Signs On For 'Bad' Remake
Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at 5:20PM
Get ready for a couple weeks of this intro: "News today
out of Cannes..."
You know how certain flavors should never go together
but they actually work great? Like french fries dipped in a chocolate shake or
ranch dressing on chicken wings? That pretty much describes my feelings for the
pair of
Nicolas Cage and
Werner Herzog.
Cage is one of the more enigmatic movie stars in the
world, who has somehow managed to overcome his peculiarities to become a very
bankable actor. Werner Herzog is one of the world's greatest filmmakers, a man
who could do just about anything, but usually chooses incredibly complex films,
whether they're documentaries about central Africa or fantasies about a man who
builds an opera house in the middle of a damned Peruvian forest.
They're two great tastes, but how do they go together?
We'll find out when Herzog remakes
Bad Lieutenant, notable for its graphic
imagery that earned an NC-17 rating, and was directed by
Abel Ferrara and
starred
Harvey Keitel. Nu Image/Millennium Films are throwing the money at the
remake, adding to their very busy year.
Cage will play the cop, who has a huge drug problem and
is also a sex addict, which means this character is essentially disgraced televangelist Ted Haggard with a badge.
The Hollywood Reporter says shooting will begin this
summer, adding, "exec producer Avi Lerner promising it will deliver as much
filth as the original."
Well, there you go. Answers that question.
If it's a hit, don't be surprised if we see Gary Sinise turn up in Bad Lieutenant Dan. After all, studios will do anything for a buck.
