'Point Break 2': 100% Pure Rehash
Thursday, May 15, 2008 at 11:36AM
Is it too early to say that nothing good can come of this?
Jan de Bont, who hasn't made a good movie since Speed, which, as it turns out, was his only good movie,
has signed on to direct the sequel to
Point Break.

Point Break: Indo
is what they're calling the follow-up, presumably because the title Desperate
Attempt at Cash: Next Stop: White Slavery was somehow already taken.
The
sequel has been rumored for some time, with talk really heating up last year
that all systems were go. Indo will chronicle events that happen 20 years after
the original, centering on the disappearance of Bodhi (Patrick Swayze) in
Southeast Asia. Well, perhaps they should hire John Rambo to look for him.
The
Hollywood Reporter claims that there is no news as to whether any of the
original Point Break cast members will be along for the ride this time, although
I wouldn't believe the odds are good.
Keanu Reeves has laughed at the notion and
Patrick Swayze's health concerns will probably keep him away from any major
project for the foreseeable future. So that leaves, what, Lori Petty and the
Buse? Good luck. The only ray of light for fans wanting Reeves to return in the role of Johnny Utah is that Keanu worked with de Bont on
Speed, so there is a little bit of history there, although it's distant history
at best. Here's a question: Would you prefer a
Point Break sequel or a Point Break remake? I guess it's splitting
hairs, but I'd rather see a gutsier, edgier remake (maybe ditch the bank
robber/surfer gang angle for something more believable, like NFL player/dog
fighting ringmaster) than what feels like an extremely late-in-the-game sequel.

I'd like to see a sequel if Keanu and Patrick were involved. Otherwise, it's Point Less. As to the remake question, I certainly hope a project like that would never see the light of day.
If Busey doesn't reprise his Oscar-worthy performance from the first Point Break...I'm going to kill myself.
