Strange New 'Strangers' Poster

The first real counterprogramming of the summer was not originally intended to be competing against Sex and the City: The Movie, though it was initially supposed to be sort of summer counterprogramming.

The new terror flick The Strangers was supposed to be an July 2007 release once upon a time, and then it was shelved until the fall. Now it winds up here in late May. Whether it needed to be shoved back a few months or whether it's good enough to compete with the blockbusters is still up in the air.

I can tell you that critics may get a chance to see it (here in Phoenix, the press screening is exactly the same time as Sex, and they're the only major releases of the week; way to go, everybody!), which could bode well for the why-don't-you-people-ever-listen-don't-you-know-by-now-that-only-bad-things-happen-when-you-go-into-the-woods movie, which stars Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as a well-off couple terrorized on their weekend in the country.

Maybe it's exactly like Funny Games, in which case, everyone involved will lose a ton of money. But I suspect it will have a component of the American torture film, which may not mean more box office if the movies of Eli Roth are any indication, but at least it might give some in the audience a sick delight or two.

Here's a new poster for The Strangers we were hipped to by IMP Awards. Apparently, it's a bus stop poster. But I'd hope they'd use this for theater advertising as well. It's crrrreeeepy.

The Strangers finally hits theaters on May 30th.

good thing it's still early in the day, so maybe I will forget this before I try and go to sleep.
