Cruise, Denzel Ratifying '28th Amendment'

tcruise11.jpgThe plan to slowly rebuild the career that took Tom Cruise less than 12 months to destroy has reportedly taken another step foward. Moviehole has learned that Cruise will play an American president in an upcoming drama, opposite Denzel Washington.

Cruise is in talks to star in the new Phillip Noyce film, The 28th Amendment, which has an interesting plot device: The President learns that the United States is not of the people, by the people, and for the people - although anyone with an ear to the ground in the past decade probably knows that much already - but is instead controlled by a secret organization.

Here's the real surprise, conspiracy theorists: The secret organization is not Skull and Bones. Denzel will play the menace behind the evil enterprise, which according to the Moviehole piece, "terminates those that get in its way." In the words of Shaggy, "Zoinks!"

Phillip Noyce is great at this kind of thing: Clear and Present Danger, The Quiet American, Patriot Games, and the recent Catch a Fire all point to a project like this in some way or another, so he's a terrific choice to direct, methinks. Cruise needs as much help as he can get these days, and hitching a wagon to Denzel Washington is never a bad thing. Plus, Denzel's a villain again, and he might be better playing villains at this stage than heroes.

But Cruise as President? Hey, I never thought Arnold could pull off being a governor, so I guess nearly anything is possible.
