Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 2:12PM 'Love Guru' Ads Beg the Question: Remember When Mike Myers Was Funny?
At a certain point, I guess we kind of expect certain
people to lose their edge. Whether it's an athlete that loses a step or even his
fiercely competitive spirit or a band that never releases anything as good as
something off their Greatest Hits record once the Greatest Hits record comes
out, we've seen it over and over.
Comedians have a particularly difficult time. Most
comics lose it eventually, and the ride is particularly rough if they've ever
spent time on
Saturday Night Live: Dan Aykroyd, Chevy
Chase, Eddie Murphy, Dennis Miller, Sandler, Billy Crystal, Dana Carvey, and
Jimmy Fallon. OK, he was never funny. (*Yes, it appears that Bill Murray has
survived relatively unscathed, although he's still made a lot of awful movies in
the past 20 years).
Now that same curse hat hit
Mike Myers. Barring the first
Shrek - and I never count animated films on
someone's permanent record, either good or bad - I haven't seen anything he's
done since 1999 that has been funny:
The Cat in the Hat, a stupid cameo in a the
downright awful
View From the Top, spoofing Austin Powers in a
Britney Spears video, and based on the parts of
The Love Guru that they're actively selling,
he's fresh out of funny.
I mean, these are the commercials. That's where you
throw your two funniest jokes! I don't even know what the jokes are here.
For those of you wishing you hadn't just watched those
ads: A) I feel your pain, and B) At least you won't blow your money on The
Love Guru when it hits theaters on June 20th.

You can't have a discussion of comedians who've lost it big-time without including Robin Williams (his "prime" comedy stuff has NOT held up well, BTW); that would be like excluding Ted Williams from the group of great ballplayers who've been decapitated after their death...
