Some of the most compelling television of the year has been
the heated denials of Roger Clemens. One a shoo-in for baseball's Hall of Fame,
Clemens has had the best half of his career questioned by allegations that he
began using steroids and HGH no later than 1998. The aftershocks of The Rocket's
name winding up in MLB's Mitchell Report have led to an angry 60 Minutes
interview, the soap opera of Clemens' friend Andy Pettitte turning his back on
Roger in the name of the truth, and Clemens testifying in front of Congress that
Pettitte "misremembered" conversations they allegedly had about steroids and
that he'd never heard of HGH until a couple of years ago...when his wife started
using it.
So now Clemens may not get into Cooperstown. And it took
steroids out of the discussion about hitting more home runs and into the
discussion about how the problem is more widespread than we think.
Some users, like Gregg Valentino (pictured below), are pretty obvious.
Others are more careful, particularly in professional sports, knowing the
pitfalls of being caught, which somehow outweigh the pitfalls of using them in
the first place.

The new documentary,
Bigger, Stronger, Faster*, is here
at just the right time. It seeks to investigate why athletes, fully aware of the
health and professional risks, still pursue steroids to get themselves ahead.
And it looks at steroids from the everyman perspective, too. Because ultimately,
that's where the danger is.

Bigger, Stronger, Faster* gets limited release this Friday, May 30th. And then it'll expand like a 14-year-old on the juice.
