Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at 1:50PM 'The Edge of Love' Poster Is On the Edge of Boredom
I guess if your movie stars
Keira Knightley and
Sienna Miller, you could make a mistake and not
put their faces on your poster, or you could do what the new period piece
The Edge of Love has done: Put both of them on
a poster, laying on their backs, looking upward.

Granted, it's not the best picture of either one of
them, and perhaps the horizontal pose isn't the most flattering, particularly
for Sienna, but it's still better than not having them on the poster, I think.
One odd quirk for the new film co-starring
Cillian Murphy in which
Matthew Rhys plays Dylan Thomas and Miller and
Knightley do a tug-of-war for his affection: Notice that great series of quotes
at the top of the poster? "Brilliant," "...best performances," "Absolutely
sensational"? You have to look at the
extra large image at IMP Awards to spot the
credits, but they actually are attributed to the Daily Mail, GQ,
and In Style.
It's becoming more and more frequent to make believe a
movie is getting praise, though, which is why I noticed in the first place that
I couldn't really notice it. But I've seen enough TV ads for movies that zoom
giant graphics by that say things like "The Biggest Comedy of the Year!" or
"Terrific Action!" and they're not actually critical reactions, just buzzwords,
which means nobody said it but everybody involved wants you to believe
it.
Despite the praise on the poster, be forewarned of one
thing. The Edge of Love marks Keira Knightley's singing debut. She says,
"I can't really sing. I had to have a few lessons, but once I started doing it,
a sound emerged that wasn't too disagreeable."
"A sound emerged that wasn't too disagreeable." That
comment would look great on a poster, don't you think?
