'Pirates' Director in a State of 'Shock'

Gore Verbinski, whose versatility has shown with The Ring, The Weatherman and a little trilogy about pirates, is preparing for Bioshock. The director and Universal will bring the Take-Two Interactive game to theaters, and Variety notes that John Logan (The Aviator) is working on the script.

It's also being reported that the deal between Universal and Take-Two is the biggest of its kind since Halo was sold back in 2005, although there has been nothing but frustration for fans of that game waiting for a blockbuster, once rumored to be directed by Peter Jackson. Of the contract, Take-Two's Strauss Zelnick says, "The reason I structured it the way I did is to make sure it gets made."

Verbinski says he loves the narrative of Bioshock, adding, "I think the whole utopia-gone-wrong story that's cleverly unveiled to players is just brimming with cinematic potential." It's also one of the very few videogames, if not the only one, really, that is based on Any Rand philosophies on the free market. Oh yeah: And it's underwater.

There's no target date for the release, although Zelnick, who used to run Fox back in the day, says Take-Two desperately wants more interaction in making the film than previous game producers have sought. In that case, it will probably be a painstaking operation, but one that could absolutely blow your freakin' mind.

This game has so much more potential for a movie then Halo. I have high hopes it will be the first acceptable video-game movie adaption to reach a wider audience then just the gamers.
