Flames Engulf Universal Studios Backlot

A terrible blaze ripped through the world famous backlot at Universal Studios early this morning, destroying several cityscapes and the King Kong attraction, though none of the original negatives or tapes in the vaults at Universal were damaged.

Because of the importance of this story, we wanted to wait until more facts were uncovered before reporting it.

As bad as it looks in the photo above, the fire was contained within a few hours, according to reports, so much so that the MTV Movie Awards were scheduled to proceed as planned at the nearby Universal Amphitheater. Lost in the fire, however, were Universal's New York street cityscape and the Court House Square, best remembered in Back to the Future.

"Fortunately, nothing irreplaceable was lost," Meyer said. "We have duplicates."

Universal Studios Hollywood and the Universal CityWalk were to remain closed on Sunday, but are believed to be reopening for normal business on Monday.
