Lawrence Kasdan to Pen 'Robotech' Script for Tobey Maguire?

robotech1.jpgEarlier today, we railed against a rumor we don't think has a snowball's chance: Leonardo DiCaprio as Captain America. And now, we have a rumor that might have more in its favor. CHUD has received word that Lawrence Kasdan might write the screenplay for the adaptation of Robotech for Tobey Maguire's ingeniously named Maguire Entertainment.

Tobey will also star in the flick, or so we're to believe. Now, in case you've forgotten about Kasdan's sci-fi cred, he did work on the scripts for Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Of course, he also wrote Wyatt Earp and The Bodyguard, but still.

If the rumor's true, that means Kasdan is polishing up two highly anticipated event movies, with Clash of the Titans and Robotech currently scheduled as 2010 releases. That's quite a comeback.

Robotech was originally an anime series that debuted in the United States in the mid-1980s, and the name refers to the technological advances found in an alien craft that had crashed on a deserted island. Then, cagy scientists built big, planet-defending robots out of the wreckage to protect Earth from extraterrestrial invaders.

The series became even more popular when it came to home video, and Robotech has spawned tons of spinoffs, from animated sequels to games. This would be the largest undertaking by far, however, and as CHUD points out, even though it seemed like a project without much life, hiring a guy with Kasden's pedigree is a sign of speeding up, not slowing down.
