Trailer - Spike Lee's 'Miracle at St. Anna'

miraclefinalonesheet-%283%29.jpgDespite all the recent ruckus between Clint Eastwood and Spike Lee, there is a movie that's part of this debate, Lee's upcoming Miracle at St. Anna.

Based on James McBride's novel, Miracle at St. Anna depicts a group of soldiers from the 92nd, all-black Buffalo Division fighting against Nazi occupation in Tuscany, Italy during World War II.

The new trailer is out, just before all the talk of Eastwood avoid black soldiers in his recent Flags of Our Fathers has died down. And, you know what? It looks like Spike might really have something here.

I think it has a really involving postscript, based just on what we see in the trailer, and it's well-edited so you can get a sense of what's going on without having the whole thing spelled out for you.

Take a look for yourself.

Miracle at St. Anna opens on September 26th and stars Laz Alonzo, Derek Luke, and John Turturro.

You've seen the trailer, but I've read the book, and it is not very good. The event upon which it is based took place on August 12, 1944. Troops from the 16th SS Panzer Grenadier Division killed 560 people in the village of Sant'Anna di Stazzema. No US soldiers, let alone African-Americans, were involved. One villager stated:"It's a false reconstruction that does not take account of the historical reality," adding "This sort of fiction should be banned, otherwise the damage to the memory and historical truth will be very serious." I don't believe in banning anything, and still plan to see the movie. That said, I think Spike Lee needs to get his own glass house in order before throwing stones at Clint Eastwood.
